Chapter Seven
When Bryce got back to the park he wasted no time finding the movie people and laying down the rules. He even enjoyed it. The producer, a fussy man in his fifties, made it clear that he wasnât used to receiving less than red-carpet treatment and would complain to the executive producer, who happened to be Robert Gaudet. Bryce was surprised how much satisfaction he took in telling the man to go right ahead.
Making it clear he had the princessâs backing to run things his way, he told them exactly where they could go and what they could do within the park. This wasnât Deerworld, and the deer werenât special-effects toys. They were valuable wild animals and too much stress could harm the stock, even kill them. He also pointed out that his staff would enforce the rules and eject anyone who flouted them. They could tell that to Gaudet, too.
Satisfied, he went back to more useful work.
It was late afternoon by the time he finished overseeing the feeding run and strategic placement of the mineral blocks needed to supplement the herdâs diet, and headed home to shower and change. He had snatched a quick lunch on the job, and looked forward to spending some quality time with Amanda.
By the time he emerged feeling human again, she still hadnât returned. Frowning, he looked at his watch. She and Mary Jo were working on a project together after school, but she should have been home by now.
He called the school library, but two girls werenât there. However, the librarian had seen them go into the Youth Vocational Center in Merrisand Village, outside the castle wall.
Replacing the receiver, he felt another frown settle on his forehead. What were Amanda and her friend doing in a center for troubled teenagers? Was his daughter in some kind of trouble? She had promised not to run away again and he trusted her, but these days there was a gulf between them he couldnât seem to cross. Would she tell him if she had a problem?
He reached the center in record time and was directed to an office, where he found Amanda, her arms full of files. Mary Jo was on the floor sorting more folders. Amanda looked surprised to see him, as well she might.
âWhat are you doing here, Dad?â
He closed the door. âI was about to ask you the same thing. You told me you were working on a school project today.â
She gestured with her free hand. âThis is our project. Today we were studying the Merrisand Trust, and Miss Giselle assigned us to find out some ways the trust helps other children. They provide the funds for this center, so we asked if we could visit and see what they do here.â
From the floor, Mary Jo nodded. âMrs. Martin, the director, is really nice. She told us how the center teaches underprivileged teenagers how to do trades and crafts and stuff so they can get jobs and have a future. She was so helpful, we wanted to do something in return, so she let us help organize some files.
